Discover - Problem & Solution

Discovering the Problem and Solution

  • Accessibility: The college library an essential resource was inaccessible during the pandemic. About 400 students a day would enter the library building at NMIMS University merely to see if a book was available.
  • Lack of Exposure: The students would lose out on the exposure reading more resources which were available,
  • Fees: Late fee is applicable once a book is past its date of submission. However, it is hard to keep track of when a book is due.
  • Cross cultural learning: Diminished due to lack of interaction between students

Defining a Solution

  • Accessibility: Create a well-organised NMIMS Library Management System App for issuing as well as searching books. The system must be able to help both the librarian as well as the students to keep a constant track of all the books available at the library.
  • Exposure: Feature where library app suggest what to read based on previous history, what others are reading in your class, etc
  • Fees: The user is able to easily check the books borrowed, when they are due, the late fee (if applicable)
  • Cross cultural learning: The students are able to experience cross cultural learning by interacting with each other

Define - Research Questions

  • Who are the users?
The students of the college would be the primary users, in addition to the faculties/ professors.
  • What is my end goal?
To create a more accessible library at the palm of the users hand. Make it easier for the users to find relevant resources (textbooks, research papers, etc.) in their desired fields.
  • Is YourLibrary app solving a specific problem? If yes what? Accessibility. YourLibrary aims at making library management easier. Making readable material more easily available and accessible, even remotely.
  • How is Your Library better than other similar products in the market?YourLibrary has a more personalised interface that makes it easier for students to access resources that are available in their college libraries.
Similar products in the markets have lower usability as opposed to our app. It is harder for an average user to figure out the other products, with little to no personalised content.
  • Why have I selected this particular niche?
I see the potential for a good design in this niche, as opposed to the ones that already exist. This topic appeals to me due to the sheer shortage of a good app for the same.

Next Steps

  • What I learnt?
With YourLibrary App, I learnt the importance of user feedback. Design is an iterative process and for achieving the best possible results, it’s prudent to incorporate feedback and inputs given by the users.
  • Next Features to be added in the App
The current YourLibrary app is made from the perspective of the students. To scale up, the app can be designed for the librarians perspective as well, to help with the library department as a whole.
